Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information were revealed.

This involved seeking to disable his tracking device and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the detention, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the protest called by his child.

His son, Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on social media on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your country, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your settee? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could "pray for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the magistrate's determination was the possibility of his transfer to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a record of arranging to request asylum through a embassy office", a announcement said.

The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the US embassy in the capital, the capital city, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.

International Reactions

His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist United States President Donald Trump, leading him to impose a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will undergo a detention review on the next day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the Top Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that Bolsonaro be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was determined responsible of leading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the national vote to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plan which involved plans to kill Lula and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was stopped because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the armed forces officials. His successor was took office without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, many Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised government buildings in the capital, Brasília.

The security forces intervened and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been incited by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the moment, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
