Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
